Patchouli is a tropical plant of the Lamiaceae family grown in Indonesia and the Philippines. Its name, which first appeared in the early 19th century, probably comes from a Tamil word made up of the words patch ‘green’ and ilai ‘leaf’. It has long been associated with the hippie movement of the 1970s, with women wearing the fragrance with a Patchouli base note.
