Myrtle is a plant in the Myrtaceae family. It features prominently in the writings of Hippocrates, Pliny, Dioscorides, Galen and Arab writers. It has been prescribed for fever and pain by ancient physicians since at least 2,500 BC. The berries are also used in Corsica and Sardinia to produce a regional digestive liqueur, Myrtle liqueur.
