The use of caraway is attested in ancient Egypt 1500 years before our era, it is a very old spice, used since the Middle Ages for its digestive virtues. It was used in many dishes and is mentioned in Shakespeare's Henry IV: in Act II, Falstaff is invited to eat a meal of rennet and caraway, supposed to aid digestion.
