Horsetail is one of the oldest plants in the world. It already existed in prehistoric times, as fossilised footprints found by scientists attest. At that time, Horsetail was over ten metres long. As early as the 1st century AD, its medicinal properties were recorded by the naturalist Pliny the Elder and the physician Dioscorides. In the 17th century, horsetail was used in Europe to heal wounds and skin inflammations, and to relieve kidney stones.
