Native to Asia, where it has been used for some three millennia, ginger was used for its medicinal and culinary virtues by the Romans and Greeks. It was called zenj by Arab traders, a word by which they also designated the inhabitants of the east coast of Africa and from which the name “Zanzibar” derives, where the Arabs went to collect ginger. In the Middle Ages, it was considered a magical aphrodisiac plant. Ginger essential oil is obtained by steam distillation of the rhizomes. It takes around 50 kg of dried rhizomes to obtain 1 kg of essential oil.
