When the bark of the mastic tree is cut, the resin that flows out is called mastic: it is the treatment of choice for stomach ulcers. In the East, the resin is traditionally used as a scented masticatory to protect the gums and freshen breath. In Europe, at the beginning of the 20th century, it was used medicinally as an antidiarrhoeal for children, as an antiscorbutic and as a poultice or fumigant. In dentistry, it was used to occlude decayed teeth.
